Daredevil Born Again Review

The Devil is back and he is in hell! Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 premiered on March 24th with the episode “The Northern Star”. Our goal is to do a weekly review of each episode for this season. It’s an exciting time to be a Marvel fan with the announcement of The Punisher one shot coming out a week after the season finale of Born Again. It has us asking questions about the fate of certain characters and the overall story for Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk.

“The Northern Star” starts with an exciting battle on a cargo ship that introduces Daredevil’s new black suit inspired by the Shadowland storyline. This was the perfect way to start off the season with pure action and suspense. Matt seems to be more aggressive as Daredevil, his punches seem to carry more weight and causes more damage. A great contrast to the Matt we will see throughout this episode. Like all seasons before this (including while it was on Netflix), the show may be called Daredevil but this very much feels like an ensemble. The episode explores the hunt for the two crew members of the cargo ship with Fisk wanting them gone and Matt attempting to save them.

Daredevil: Shadowland, Marvel Comics

Charlie Cox continues to be the best version of Matt Murdock and Daredevil but Vincent D’Onofrio as Mayor Wilson Fisk is down right terrifying. There is a scene at a dining table where Fisk is challenged by a scene stealing Matthew Lillard. Not physically challenged but in terms of leadership and control. After that scene, I cannot wait to see what is in store for Matthew Lillard’s character. Overall the episode is a great start to a new chapter with returning characters continuing their story arc, Matthew Lillard’s character potentially being a bigger character than expected and hints of what to expect going forward.

As I was watching, I did find myself asking questions and theorizing what was going to happen. Who is Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard)? With the way the episode ends are we going to see a redemption arc for a character that has been a part of the series for a while? And finally, is this season going to lead to the death of Karen Page? Is Fisk’s ATVF based on current events in today’s society? When a season premiere has you asking questions about future episodes, it has you hooked. While I really enjoyed the first season, it was uneven at moments as it was easy to notice the change in show runners throughout the season. One episode through, and I feel confident that this season could rival what they created with the original Netflix series.
