Daredevil Born Again S2 Ep6

As always Spoiler Alert!

This is exactly what Marvel Television should be, the extension of the Marvel Universe. An extension that is not afraid of taking risks. Daredevil: Born Again continues to be the definition of taking risks. Episode 5 “The Grand Design” was the slow emotional filled chapter, we spent the episode feeling sympathy for Wilson with the loss of Vanessa. (Sorry, spoiler! Its difficult to discuss this episode without spoiling previous episodes). Episode 6 “Requiem” is the episode that is fast paced and truly captures the fear of Wilson Fisk unleashed. The episode asks what happens when nothing is keeping Fisk in control. Episode 6 is another strong episode that is putting Daredevil Born Again up there with Loki as one of the best Marvel Television shows.

“Requiem” is one of those episodes that could have ended the season and left the viewers with cliffhangers for the next season. We get the return of Jessica Jones, a city that has had enough of Fisk’s attacks, and we see the relationship between Karen and Matt start deteriorating. These are major moments that could act as a tease for Season 3. However we have two episodes left of this season and I have no idea what to expect with the events of this episode.

Daredevil: Born Again has this trend going that each episode will explore a different theme. Last episode was about mercy and redemption. “Requiem” explores fear and trauma, which is established from the very first scene of the episode. A silent Vincent D’Onofrio uses his expressions and aura in this episode, the trauma of losing a loved one has caused Fisk to snap. D’Onofrio does not need to use his voice to enforce feeling. While Daniel is afraid of the feelings he has for BB and the reaction that Wilson and Buck will have knowing that she is the leak. Matt is fearful that Karen is embracing the attitude of Frank Castle and her willingness to kill. Finally, New York City is fearful and tired of Fisk’s raid on those that oppose him, causing the city to snap.

It’s always great to see Jessica Jones, Krysten Ritter has made the character her own as most of those from the Netflix shows did. From a story perspective, bringing her back is a great way to connect certain characters and their motives, which seem to have more impact on the overall Marvel Universe. That being said, her involvement in this episode felt like a glorified cameo. She kicks ass in two scenes and gives us a tease of what to expect from the future of The Defenders and Marvel Television. I think Disney and Marvel made a mistake showing Jessica Jones in the advertising, as we waited to see her until the sixth episode.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer may have spoiled one of the story threads from this season but with how well the story is being told, it does not matter. Also I need Mr. Charles to be a reoccurring character throughout the MCU, as Matthew Lillard is crushing it. Which is wishful thinking because I fear Mr. Charles will feel the wrath of Wilson Fisk sooner than later. Another amazing episode of Daredevil Born Again that continues to make me excited for the future of the Marvel Universe.
