This show gives no fucks! Daredevil: Born Again is probably the most mature show that Disney and Marvel Studios has ever made. Season 1 was pretty mature with the use of language and action. However each episode of this season, the blood, the language and social critique increases. It seriously has me questioning what will happen with rest of the season, as we are at the half way point. Episode 4 titled “Gloves Off” is the perfect title to where this story is going and the first time in a Marvel Studios show that I said “Oh Shit!” at the end.

“Gloves Off” is a Bullseye focused episode, from the opening scene to the events of the final scene all involves Bullseye. Wilson Bethel has played the character for a few seasons (going back to when the series was on Netflix), however this felt like the first episode that the showrunners told him to unleash. Bethel shows so much character development with a character that is trying to find absolution and desire to kill the Kingpin. The show opens with one of the best action scenes that truly lets Bullseye unleash on AVTF agents. During the action scene, Bullseye even hints at being the “good guy” while taking out the agents.

Outside of focusing on Bullseye, Wilson Fisk is preparing for a charity boxing match, Karen is gathering video confessions of those that Fisk has held capture, and Daredevil is on the hunt for Bullseye. Also the return of Matthew Lillard’s character Mr. Charles. Like mentioned in previous reviews for episodes of this season, Daredevil Born Again is a ensemble piece. All the supporting characters are important and even outshine Daredevil. By the time the episode ends, Bullseye has easily become my favorite character. Although with that said, the show does benefit from Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio continuing to establish themselves as the best adaptations of the characters. This whole season has been a masterclass of character devolvement and shows that Marvel is capable of telling mature stories that DC has been doing so efficiently.

I am going to avoid spoilers here because this episode is one of those episodes that you have to experience yourself. So far, its my favorite episode of the season from blood soaked action to critique on current events. This episode has it all and I can only hope that this continues with the final half of the season. Need to spotlight, Ayelet Zurer’s performance of Vanessa Fisk. As we discuss this being an ensemble piece, Vanessa controls to be a powerhouse in a show filled with amazing performances.

Hopefully this is not the final episode that has Tony Dalton as Jacques Duquense as dialogue hinted it may be, his presence on the show will be missed. If so, he did leave us with a great piece of advice to Daredevil

You are not hero. You’re a Symbol now!
