Before diving into the review for Scream 7, I have a statement to make. If Nora can spend over $60 on popcorn buckets and cups for Scream, I can do the same thing for Avengers: Doomsday, Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Alright now that is out of the way, how was Scream 7? It is the potential nail in the coffin for the franchise.

Nora’s Ghostface Haul

Scream 7 is a new modern take on the franchise that has an over reliance on technology. Throughout the whole film, one way or another technology was involved. Which resulted in some cool moments, but followed up by some cheap pops. (To use a wrestling term, they did it to get a reaction from the crowd).

The concept of a new Ghostface going after Sidney’s daughter is a smart one. One that can keep the franchise going on, however as cool as mommy Sidney (Neve Campbell) is, her daughter Tatum (Isabel May) is not. Really hate to say this, outside of the addition of Joel McHale as Sidney’s husband, the new cast is pretty weak. They were there to be the prey for Ghostface.

Scream 7. Paramount Films

In an odd way, as the film uses technology for a modern interpretation, it has a heavy emphasis of nostalgia. From the opening scene to the final scene, it feels familiar. The opening scene is a parody on how as a society we celebrate tragedy. Which was one of the more enjoyable scenes in the film, along with a brutal scene on a theater stage.

As the credit rolls to Ice Nine Kills “Twisting The Knife,” I found myself thinking Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox are still great as Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers. Scream 7 has some of the more interesting slaughters in the franchise, but I was really missing Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera from Scream 6.

Truthfully this felt like a money grab after the success of Scream 5 and Scream 6. The overall experience felt cheap with how often they relied on technology to build up the suspense. Even though it felt modern, it removed realism from the Franchise. Don’t get me wrong, there were some moments I enjoyed and had fun with. But it just didn’t hit the mark like most in the franchise. Usually Scream films are smart, but this one is not.
