Is this the end of The Comic Shop? Well the first season at least and they left us wanting more. After spending 6 episodes with the crew from Oh Em Gee Comics, we discovered one of our favorite shows of 2025. Each episode is around 15 minutes on a small budget, yet if you are a comic book fan, this show should be viewed. The Comic Shop is not perfect, but I think that makes the show work as no comic shop we ever walked into was perfect.
In the first episode, the crew of Oh Em Gee Comics dealt with Free Comic Book Day, a rat sighting, and a thief. Which are all common things that a comic shop will deal with, ask anyone that has worked at a shop, they have experienced at least one of these things… if not in the same week. The following three episodes deal with Dungeons and Dragons, a comic prank and a new employee. I would say that as someone who had some involvement with a comic shop, that Dungeons and Dragons and a comic prank never occurred but the episode about a new employee hit home. That being said each episode was relatable and delivered on the laughs especially episode 4.
Episode 4 titled Dungeons and Dragons, the crew promised Connor a night of Dungeons and Dragons for his birthday. Only problem is only Connor and his D&D group knows how to play. Stephanie and Keith are reluctant to play, whereas Dominique is relishing the opportunity to play. Stephanie is ready to go home until Connor’s attractive friend Amber walks in. This is when the hilarious friendly battle of getting Amber’s attention starts. This episode had some of the best gags and one-liners in the season.
Episode 5 titled The Comic Prank, Keith’s friend starts a horrible trend to get some followers that involves dropping comics. The prank takes off and turns Oh Em Gee Comics into a viral sensation for all the wrong reasons. Maybe its being in our thirties that we didn’t enjoy this episode as much as the others. That being said, the running gag of Stephanie trying to maintain her stress levels was perfect. This episode did end with a great message of not being afraid to being yourself and its ok to like comics.
Episode 6 titled Our Pale Dave, this was a fantastic season finale for this show. Guest starring the voice of Cyborg from Teen Titans and Ezekiel Sutton from The Walking Dead Khary Payton as Dave. This episode is a balancing act between comedy and melodrama. As a new employee enters the fray and throws everything off. From Dominique and Connor butting heads over social media to Stephanie and Keith battling over leadership, the dynamics are thrown off. Seeing Payton in this role was perfect and added the extra ingredient to a show that already needed a season 2. Although I kept thinking to myself, does Khary really sound like that or was Cyborg working for Oh Em Gee Comics.
Overall I was really pleased with how the first season of The Comic Shop turned out. This being a passion project for all those involved, you can feel the love in each episode. The Comic Shop knows exactly what it is, its a love letter to nerd culture masquerading as a work place sitcom. Despite being a supporting character, Shanae Cole’s performance of Dominique is the highlight of the show. Every scene that she is in, I found myself laughing too damn hard. The rest of the cast is great too as you can sense they can relate to their characters but Dominique is my favorite character.
Unbeknownst to this writer, it would be a Instagram post that showed that both Khary Payton and Zeno Robinson voiced Cyborg. If you have watched the show check out their Instagram page as it does a great job at letting the viewer get a behind the scene look at the show. Another thing I would recommend, would be checking out and potentially backing the kickstarter for the comic book adaptation of The Comic Shop. That’s right, if backed we could be getting a comic book based on this show. (Yes I already backed it!)
