Hey, comic fans! Those that are reading this, do you know that there is a sitcom about a comic shop on Youtube? Lucky for us, there is a brand new series called The Comic Shop and its hilarious. Last year, I started to follow the social media page for a series. It was seeking support on a Kickstarter. Now, we have three episodes to watch. I have spent time working in a comic shop. I can say they capture the humorous nature of working at a shop.

The first three episodes are called “Free Comic Book Day”, “Rat City”, and “Comic Book Thief”. This is the perfect start and something that anyone in the comic industry could relate to. If each episode focuses on specific elements of working at a comic shop, the creators deserve credit. They truly understand what it is like to work at a comic shop.

In the series premiere of “Free Comic Book Day,” the crew at OhEmGee Comics are struggling to bring customers in. It’s the biggest day of the year at a comic shop. Its Free comic book day, which is usually the busiest days at a comic shop. The crew brings in a well-known comic writer. This ensures the comic shop will be busy on this day. This is something that almost every shop does on Free comic book day. Its a surefire way to bring new people in the shop.

The episode titled “Rat City” is all about the owner trying to impress her mom while dealing with a rat in the shop. That is the premise and its so damn relatable. Whenever we needed the shop to be perfect, something would go wrong. The Comic Shop captures this well, especially with convincing parents that owning a comic shop is the right decision.

The Comic Shop. Awkward Virgo TV

The episode titled “Comic Book Thief” is the worst nightmare of a comic shop owner. Books and collectibles are stolen after the shop is broken into. This episode reminded me of What We Do In The Shadows, with a character taking the theft to the extreme. He dresses up as an old English detective and acts like Sherlock Holmes. This very much reminded me of what we see with Lazlo in What We Do In the Shadows, just completely random and works well.

My biggest complaint of the show so far is the length of each episode. Episode 3 was slightly over 12 minutes and wanted more. The pilot was probably the weakest of the 3 episode, but the next two had me laughing out loud. Cheyenne Ewulu is the co-creator and plays Stephanie, the main character of the show. Its obvious she loves comic books with the amount of references to the hobby and medium. Zeno Robinson is Keith the goofball co-owner to store. Shanae Cole steals every scene as Dominique. In the first episode, found myself not like Dominique and by the end of the third episode she was my favorite character.

Found myself comparing this show to What We Do In The Shadows and Abbott Elementary in the best of ways. The budget is small but that doesn’t hold it back from being a fun show. I would say the audience may be limited as it is truly a show made for those that love comics. If you love comic books and spent any time in a comic shop, I recommend checking out The Comic Shop.

Episodes come out every Friday on Awkward Virgo TV channel. We will review the next 3 episodes when they come out.
