DC Animated films tend to be hit or miss for me, for every Batman: Under The Red Hood there is a forgettable entry like Green Lantern: Beware My Power. Despite that, I have been a fan of the animated films that come from DC since being introduced to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns in 2013. I am happy to say that Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons is closer to Batman: Under the Red Hood with great visuals and superb voice acting.

Warner Bros Animation, DC Comics
When the opening credits started to roll, I found myself get a sense of excitement when it showed “written by Jeremy Adams”. Adams has a history of being a solid comic book writer and having him as the script writer, I knew this film would have a passion and care for the characters. Sure enough, this felt like a comic book come to life with Jonathan Kent and Damian Wayne being captured to perfection.
Shazam! star Jack Dylan Glazer voices Jonathan Kent with an amazing sense of wonder and enthusiasm that makes it easy to root for Jonathan. Jack Griffo has a great understanding of what makes Damian Wayne so lovable. This may be a benefit of a strong script and great banter between the characters, but the voice acting from the main two characters is among the strongest in DC animated films. Travis Willingham is a standout as Superman, really captures the essence of Superman with a bellowing yet caring voice.
As for the storyline, it’s a pretty basic superhero fare as we see the super sons facing off against the Justice League while being controlled by Starro. Yes, its basic but it is well done as it hits certain story beats with setting up battles against father and son, and against friends. On the topic of Starro, this is a family friendly animated film but whenever Starro takes over a body, it shows some disturbing body horror, but perfect for the character. It’s very much DC’s take on the Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
